Skyline drive runs parallel to Rt 81. It takes 3 hours to get on the drive at Rt 211 and another hour to get to mile 50 where a lot of the trails are.
Dickey Ridge Visitors Center (mi 4.6), and Harry F. Byrd Visitors Center (mi 51.0) both had good books on trails. There is a $2 book called "Hikes to Waterfalls" that is half decent. The rangers have maps (behind there desk) of specific trails that they will gladly highlight the hikes on and give to you.
